The combination of a blank page and empty mind is the dreaded scenario for a writer at any stage of their career.
That feeling of blankness as you sit down to make the most of precious writing time you’ve managed to carve out of your busy schedule isn’t only frustrating, but it can also be incredibly disheartening.
Therefore, we’re here to help you rekindle that literary spark and get back to crafting your work-in-progress…
Top tip #1 – Take a break
Now, this one may seem counterintuitive, though taking a break from your writing is essential when writer’s block strikes. As challenging as it can be to walk away from your desk, writer’s block could be a signal of impending burnout. Listen to what you need and give yourself permission to relax away from writing. Often, taking a break could be just the ticket for discovering a new form of inspiration!
Taking a break from writing could be the ideal opportunity to try a new hobby as well – photography, crochet, or painting, perhaps?
Top tip #2 – Read an inspirational book
For the Horseshoe Books team, books are a wonderful source of inspiration. Reading offers a fantastic escape from writer’s block. And, if you’re the type of person who feels guilty for spending time on self-care (which you should never feel guilty about, by the way…), then consider reading an excellent new book as a form of market research.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab a book, eReader, or headphones and get reading or listening to the next book on your TBR list!
Top tip #3 – Write something totally different
If you can’t help yourself from picking up that pen or opening that laptop, then you can destroy writer’s block by setting aside your current project to write something totally different. And by ‘totally different’ we’re referring to a literary project you’d never have considered before. For instance, if you’re a novelist, try writing short story in a new genre – likewise, if you’re a short story writer, why not trial flash fiction or poetry? It’s likely that you’ll restore the desire to work on your original project while your mind is occupied with writing something else.
